Betty Laughton

I learned to knit at my mother's knee and was a proficient knitter by the end of primary school. From then on, the needles were never far away. In 1991 I accidentally discovered machine knitting and, as it produced garments more quickly, I was soon, literally, 'hooked'. Now machine knitting is my day job and hand knitting is my hobby.

In my machine knitting, garments are hand-framed on a domestic knitting machine. My patterns fall into 2 categories - traditional (my own version of traditional Fair Isle patterns) and contemporary (a more modern theme often based on geometric shapes). I love colour and am influenced by the many colours and tones of scenery and nature which we are lucky to have all round us. As a result no 2 garments are ever completely the same.

The more flamboyant side of my nature comes out in my hand knitting often using bright multi-coloured mohairs. A fine self-coloured mohair can also be used in more traditional patterns

I hope you enjoy looking at my knitwear as much as I enjoy making it.
